Gogglesprogs Review penultimate ★★★

‘If somebody says their career is pottery, you instantly know they’re very boring’

This week’s Gogglesprogs episode I found to be slightly disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the children’s wit was still on top form, but what was on telly this week was just pretty boring. From Bake Off does Pottery to a spelling-bee show, even the Gogglesprogs themselves seemed less enthused about what they were watching.

The One Show episode with the Queen meeting representatives from the commonwealth, is one example of a programme that would not appeal to most children, especially the younger ones such as Molly and William, among others. The only problem with a show like Gogglesprogs, is that when TV programmes shown that week are boring, the show itself can be too; as it is essentially a review of the week’s television and current events; some weeks will be more eventful than others. Despite the less interesting programmes they were watching, the children nevertheless kept the episode afloat and made me laugh out loud to myself in parts – which they have done consistently since this series began.

One of the more interesting shows the children watched this week was Three Wives One Husband, documenting the lives of a small Mormon-fundamentalist community in the USA. As always, the more testing and controversial programmes are the greatest ones to watch children watching, and their insights are priceless. On the political climate and issues such as gender politics, the children prove once again more insightful and knowledgeable that most adults, with the young boys naming the show ‘sexist’, (even if they did get the term confused with feminist).

With the major issues at hand, most of the children were confused and shocked at what they saw on TV, and took to the viewing with a surprisingly serious attitude; which in itself was heart-warming to watch.

Returning to their more innocent and easily-amused with the nature and science programmes, particularly Incredible Medicine, the show returned to its more light-hearted feel with their joy at learning of the man who could taste words, to other human wonders of the body, being both informed and amused at the same time. I can see Gogglesprogs certainly making a return next year, as it has cultivated a strong following, and i for one, will certainly look forward to next week's final episode
